The next meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG for educators is scheduled for 19 May.

Date: Saturday, 19 May 2018
Time: 1:30 pm to 5 pm (doors open at 1 pm for coffee/tea)
Location: Park Plaza Hotel, Utrecht

The topic for this meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG is Flipped Classroom Teaching with guest speaker Philip Springer.

We are pleased to welcome Philip Springer as our guest speaker for this meeting. Philip holds a PhD in Linguistics and has extensive teaching experience at both secondary schools and universities. He is currently the coordinator for scientific English courses at the Taalcentrum-VU in Amsterdam.

At the beginning of the current school year, VU University Amsterdam switched from using Blackboard as its online platform to Canvas. This has brought about significant changes in the way that the Taalcentrum’s courses in scientific English are taught. The advanced functionalities of Canvas have made it possible to work for the first time in a paper-free format. The added flexibility offered by Canvas also made it possible to replace the previous lecture-style format with a flipped classroom style. In this system, lectures are de-emphasized in favor of doing exercises on the study materials that have been offered on Canvas during the previous week. Philip will have lots of information for you on how this all works and the effects this system has had on the courses offered by the Taalcentrum.

There will be time to discuss other topics at this session, so feel free to contact me about any subjects you would like to discuss, or material you wish to share.

To register, simply click the "Register" button at the top of the page.

I look forward to seeing you on 19 May

Kind regards,

David Barick, Convener
